Fall/Winter Workshops

Bulbs: Big Surprises in Small Packages

Picture

For all Grade Levels

Bulbs are highly specialized plants of economic importance to humans.

In this hour-long workshop, students will review the major parts of plants and their functions, and then investigate dissected bulbs to find those parts.

They will then plant flowering bulbs to cultivate, study, and enjoy.

Pre- and post-visit curricular materials offer a review and introduce more advanced concepts about bulbs such as how they grow, the parts of their flowers, bulb world geography, and bulb history. Younger students receive a six-week bulb journal in which they can draw and measure their bulbs each week before they take them home.

Seed Travelers

Recommended for Grades K-3

A seed is a baby plant equipped to travel, with its own sources of food and protection.

Fall is the perfect time to explore the diversity of seed shapes, colors, sizes, and dispersal methods.

Students will dissect seeds and participate in a variety of seed-related activities before planting nutritious sprouts to grow and observe.

Making Sense of Nature

Recommended for Grades K-3 and Special Education Students

Nature offers a cornucopia of textures, smells, colors, and sounds.

After reviewing the five major senses, students will experience an array of plants through sensory activities.

Then each student will create his or her own botanical wall hanging to display in the classroom or to take home.
